Door Creek Orchard

We’ve been visiting the same apple orchard every fall since our kids were little and it’s the most beautiful orchard I know. Door Creek Orchard has two main picking areas. The lower orchard near the shop where you can also buy pre picked apples and grapes as well as cider, caramel and wool that comes from the resident sheep, and the upper orchard which is my favorite because the path there leads you past the sheep and to the grapes!

I had two main goals for this orchard outing: I’ve been on the hunt for pink fleshed apples since I started seeing them pop up in all my favorite foodie instagram feeds. They are so unexpected and beautiful and I knew that Door Creek had a variety called Almata that has a bright pink, almost red flesh. And even more than eating them, I of course was dying to photograph them. (stay tuned for that post!)

My second mission was to bring home a big supply of one of my favorite fall treats. Concord grapes, which if you don’t know… are nothing like regular grapes. Concords are the grapiest grapes. They have seeds and the skin is bitter but the flavor of the grape more than makes up for that. My son and I eat them non-stop when they are in season. My mom used to seek them out each fall when I was growing up, so their flavor reminds me of her which makes them all the more sweet.

My favorite photo of the day. I love the deep color of the leaves and that one hidden apple…
